Caps at SneakerBall 2010

SneakerBall is an annual black tie and sneakers gala that celebrates the best of sports in the Greater Washington D.C. region, Organized by the Greater Washington Sports Alliance Foundation.

SneakerBall VII is an interactive awards program. The public voted in categories that define excellence in athletic performance, franchise leadership, community sponsorship and media coverage and winners were announced on September 14, 2010.
RED ROCKERS won the Best Team Spirt Award: Presented to the most enthusiastic and motivating Spirit Team in the Greater Washington, D.C. region. Congrats Red Rockers!

London Fletcher of the Washington Redskins won the Solid Character Award: Presented to the professional athlete that best exemplifies community and charitable qualities.  Mike Green was nominated for this award.

Eric Fehr, John Carlson, Brooks Laich and Nicklas Backstrom represented the Capitals at the 2010 Sneaker Ball in Washington, DC.  Stretch spoke to each of them on the red carpet and got the scoop on their sneakers and favorite DC athlete (non-Caps).
  • Fehr borrowed sneakers from John Carlson and favorite local athlete is Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez because he grew up watching him play.
  • Carlson was rockin' the red in "red old school Reebok pumps." John also likes Pudge, but got to meet Chris Cooley recently and picked him as his favorite local athlete.
  • Backstrom was excited to attend his first sneakerball and bought new shoes. Nicky likes Chris Cooley and Mike Sellers.
  • Laich wore the same sneakers as last year and wants to get more flashy ones like Stretch's cool sneakers. "I like Nyjer Morgan for the Nats. He used to play in the Western League hockey up in Canada. And then, you know, two weeks ago the little rubarb he started. (laughter). I like his game. But he's also a good player. He can steal bases. He make catches at the wall. I think he's a fantastic player." Stretch added, "We'll have to get him out on the ice" and Brooks agreed, "Yeah, you bet. Get him out."
Check out the video from the red carpet....

DCPS Beautification Day with Mike Green

Posted by Cheryl Nichols | Thursday, August 19, 2010 | , , | 0 comments »

Caps fans and Slapshot want to help make a difference in the community and are joining Capitals defenseman Mike Green from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21, at the annual D.C. Public Schools (DCPS) Beautification Day.

The Washington Capitals are hosting a project at Powell Elementary School in Northwest Washington. Volunteers will be sprucing up Powell to get it ready for the start of the school year, which is right round the corner. Every volunteer will receive a free Caps T-shirt and be provided with lunch at the conclusion of the project. Tasks include painting, gardening, organizing classrooms, assembling goody bags for students and cleaning.

So many Caps fans want to give back, that the limited space is already full.  If you are still interested in volunteering, please contact Elizabeth Wodatch, director of community relations, at ewodatch@washcaps.com in case a spot opens up.

"The Capitals are hosting this community service project as part of United We Serve, a nationwide service initiative that will help meet growing social needs resulting from the economic downturn. With the knowledge that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things when given the proper tools, President Obama is asking us to come together to help lay a new foundation for growth. This initiative aims to both expand the impact of existing organizations by engaging new volunteers in their work and encourage volunteers to develop their own "do-it-yourself" projects." -- Caps Press Release

Mike Green Named a Finalist for NHL Foundation Player Award

Posted by Cheryl Nichols | Wednesday, April 28, 2010 | , | 0 comments »

Like many professional athletes, National Hockey League players have a long-standing tradition of supporting charities and other important causes in their communities, and NHL member clubs are constant in their quest to help local schools, hospitals, and charitable organizations. In recognition of this dedication, the NHL Foundation annually awards $25,000 to a current player's charity that embodies the core values of the NHL -- commitment, perseverance and teamwork -- to enrich the lives of people in his community.

Three finalists have been selected and the winner will be announced at the NHL Awards in Las Vegas on June 23.  If Green wins, he will be the second Washington Capital to earn this award since Olie Kolzig won in 2001.

Mike Green (Defenseman) - Washington Capitals
Dustin Brown (Forward) - Los Angeles Kings
Ryan Miller (Goalie) - Buffalo Sabres

Congratulations Mike Green!
Please keep doing this important work.

According to Caps website:

Green has been a participant in Miracle on Seventh Street, hosted by the Rock Bottom Foundation, since 2006. He wasn’t content simply donating his time on Christmas and Thanksgiving Day, so in 2007 he decided to also work with the Children’s Law Center’s Adopt a Family Christmas Drive to adopt a Washington, D.C., family and to provide them with gifts during the holidays. In 2008 and 2009, Green partnered with Quality Trust for Individuals with Disabilities Family EMPOWERment Center, allowing him to deliver gifts to his adopted family in person and to spend part of the day with them. His actions led to the Capitals organization adopting 25 families in 2009 through the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program.

Green is also the co-founder of So Kids Can, a fundraising initiative that benefits a different youth-focused non-profit organization each year. He donates $100 for every goal he scores and $50 for each assist and the figures are doubled during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
In last year’s inaugural season, So Kids Can raised nearly $30,000 for Pediatric Prosthetics, Inc., an organization that helps families throughout the U.S. that have children who have lost a limb or have a congenital limb deficiency. The Washington, D.C., community has embraced the
charity as well. During the summer of 2009, Papa John’s promotional campaign raised $45,000 before the season even started for this year’s selected organization, Children’s National Medical Center. Green serves as a sports ambassador for The Children’s Inn at the National Institute of Health to help raise funds and awareness for the organization, which serves as a home for families with children who are seriously ill. Through his Green’s Gang initiative, he donates seven tickets to every Capitals home game to soldiers and their families or to children who would otherwise be unable to attend.

Caps Host Blood Drive Saturday, Nov. 21

Posted by Cheryl Nichols | Friday, November 20, 2009 | , , | 0 comments »

What better way to kick off the season of giving than to donate blood and help save lives?

Last season the Caps Inova Blood Drive collected 415 units of blood from 462 Caps fans, the most successful blood donation campaign hosted by the Capitals.

“Donating blood makes a significant difference and helps save lives,” said Capitals defenseman Mike Green. “This is an important issue where everyone can help. I encourage all Caps fans to come out, participate and help others.” The Caps are also planning a spring blood drive for March 2010.

WHO:  CAPS FANS NEEDED!

WHAT: INOVA and Washington Captials 2nd Annual Blood Drive

WHERE: Kettler Capitals Iceplex - 627 N. Glebe Rd., Arlington, VA 22203

WHEN: Saturday, November 21, 2009 from 8 am to 5 pm

HOW: Donors can make an appointment now by calling 1-866-BLOODSAVES (1-866-256-6372) or sign up online at www.inova.org/donateblood. Click on the “Schedule an Appointment” button (on the right side), and use sponsor code 7441 or zip code 22203 to find the Capitals drive. Appointments are required and walk-ins will not be permitted to donate. There is limited space available – only the first 500 fans to sign up will be able to participate. The entire donation process takes approximately one hour.

WHY:  The gift of life.  And as a bonus:  The first 500 people to schedule an appointment and attempt to give blood that day will receive a Mike Green jersey T-shirt and an autographed photo. All donors will be entered into a drawing to win a pair of tickets with suite level seating – nine pairs of tickets will be drawn.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFO FOR DONORS:
To give blood, you must be feeling generally well on the day of your donation, be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood in the past eight weeks (56 days). There is a one week wait to donate after any tattoos or body piercings. There are other factors that may affect your eligibility to give blood; any questions can be answered by calling 1-866-BLOODSAVES or by visiting www.inova.org/donateblood. Aspects of each potential donor's health history are discussed as part of the donation process before any blood is collected. Each donor receives a brief examination during which temperature, pulse, blood pressure and hemoglobin (iron level) are measured.

One blood donation can save up to three lives, and the 415 units collected last year helped more than 1,200 local patients. There is a continual need for all blood types. More than 200 blood and platelet donations are needed every day, year-round, for patients in area hospitals. Blood and platelets help many people, including trauma patients, surgery patients, newborn babies, cancer patients and transplant patients. Inova Blood Donor Services is the major supplier of blood products in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area.
