Arlington, VA. - The Washington Capitals have been nominated for the Greater DC Cares Nonprofit Impact Award, which recognizes the partnership and contributions made by a business partner to build the capacity of a nonprofit, school or community based organization better enabling them to serve, sustain and impact the community.

One of the many community programs the Caps hosted this season was the Servathon at Fort Dupont Ice Arena, a day of service intended to improve conditions at the rink in southeast Washington, D.C. As volunteers checked in, they signed up for various projects and received T-shirts courtesy of the Capitals and Greater DC Cares. The event kicked off with welcoming remarks from Laura Toscano of Greater DC Cares, Elizabeth Wodatch of the Capitals and Ty Newberry of Fort Dupont. The volunteers then went to work on indoor projects that included waxing the boards, cleaning the glass, painting the lobby and hallway behind the bleachers, cleaning hockey equipment, putting together goals and organizing hockey equipment. Despite heavy rain, many dedicated volunteers also worked on outdoor projects that included washing windows, weeding and mulching tree boxes and flower beds, raking leaves and sweeping the sidewalks and parking lot. Music was played to keep all of the volunteers motivated and in high spirits as they worked hard on their tasks, while the outdoor volunteers were kept warm with coffee and hot chocolate.
