With the elimation in the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Washington Capitals announced on Friday that captain Alex Ovechkin would represent Russia at the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship in Bratislava and Kosice, Slovakia, beginning on April 29 to May 15.

Ovechkin joined Team Russia on Saturday for his seventh appearance at the World Championship.

Russia played the Czech Republic today, Sunday, May 8 where Ovi faced former Caps teammate Jaromir Jagr and Olympic nemesis. Russia fell to Czechs 3-2.

Ovechkin had 14:49 of ice time and ended day with -1.  See link for game stats.

See photos from Sunday game here. Ovi is in the very first photo -- you can't miss the yellow shoelaces. Also in second photo on second page.

It appears that Russia plays Finland on Monday, May 9.  Good luck Ovi!
